Rhymer

~ Distorted_Reality ~

Greetings.
I my friend
am a poet.

More specifically
a Rhymer

Now most people
think we Rhymers
are uneducated
untalented, and
unoriginal folk
who are simply
incapable of
writing the free
verse style.

Isn't that
a rather
silly thought?

I strongly
believe it to
be a lie and
am here to
inform you
otherwise

I do
occasionally
write in
free form

When I
try to purposely
it just so
happens that
I rhyme it
by accident

and once I
start a pattern
I am driven
to end it to the
best of my
capability

Even though
I may not use
big smart
sounding words
or speak
intellectually most
of the time

I am still
expressing myself

Releasing whatever
present emotion
is waiting to get out

Telling whatever
story is waiting
to be told

~

The rhythm
It is in my soul
tis impossible
to stop

It is not
some toy to
just shut off
It is not a
spinning top

It is what
Is simply
caged inside
not to hide
but it is
aching

To break free
so everyone
can see the
pain that it’s
been taking

Once it busts
through I am
doomed to rhyme
No matter my plans
No matter the time

These words
age as I grow

And it seems
that I carry
them with me

To spread them
Where I go...

Oh, now I disagree with Darun. In a sense, you're saying that rhyme is harder than free verse, which is just not true. I can do both, I just choose free verse most of the time, because to be honest, rhyme sounds silly a lot of times. For a lot, it's not lack of understanding structure, it's just wanting to not sound like Dr. Suess ;) But, Rhyme is fine sometimes, I just prefer free verse 90 percent of the time.

...in order for free verse to be effective, it can't just be words on a paper; one has to be able to work with words to display the sights and sounds and feelings...otherwise, it reads like a rant, and to me that's just lazy writing...

It's the same as rhyme. If you don't do it right, it's shit. Look at cre, she's amazing at rhyme. I love her work, where as someone else does it and it might look horrid. I'm not knocking all rhyme, just saying, free verse on a whole isn't the cheap way out. It takes just as much talent, and depending on who you ask, it may even be harder, because there's so much room for it to be just another rant, as you put it.

...on the contrary, my friend, I second Jonas' statement, in so much as, Rhymers are what you call a dying breed...we are a thing of the past, because it's not as easy to get a point across when rhyming...

...if you don't have to hold a meter or rhyme, then hey, you can write down whatever you want and call it poetry...that sure takes a huge chunk of the challenge out of it, doesn't it..?

...so yeah, don't be mad that a lot of the people don't like it anymore...be glad that you're one of the few left that can grasp it well...the numbers aren't getting any larger, from what I've seen, so we need all we can get... :)

I agree with Jonas, to write within the confines of particular rhymes or rhythms is challenging; of course, rhyme that is not clearly beat is probably going to get some derogatory comments simply because of the contemporary movement away from rhyme... lyrics and beat being the exceptions that I know of.... it's just the history, maybe, that seems to date it for many readers... ho hum... ya know, many writers write about similar topics over and over... it's like there's something they have to say and it never is said in a sufficiently satisfying way... just a thought. be well.

    I personally have no issue with rhymers, in many of my pieces there is a flow of rhyme, I just have a hard time when it is forced. Well said! :}
