They found him on the corner
of 40th and Madison,
still clutching a suspicious-looking bottle,
and the women
averted their expensively contoured eyes
and would have frowned, if they could have.

He wore an army surplus jacket
and a T-shirt that read,
optimistically,
"I [heart] NY".

Its laugh worthy only in its irony - loving the place that lets him retain and remain in poverty stricken silence - but its as tragic as the battlefield where his jacket would seem more suited...all the same tragic and terrifying

I have no idea why this should make you laugh, but OK.

it is more powerful because of what is left unsaid. The short simplicity of it implies something deeper and darker is brooding beneath the surface. "expensively contoured eyes"..oh, how those ladies avoid too much.

Can't figure out what about this grabs me. Could be the simplicity of tragedy or the unpainted scene. Interesting read. ~Ship!

i like the imagery in this one...and i think it's far from subtle. good write. :)

This one just works. It's subtle, but it speaks loudly.
