so we live in a world where a hand held out, grasping for life
just looks like someone trying to drag you down. this is a ladder
of success and privilege- you want to make it, you trample on others
to get to the top, even though you don't know if what's up there
is worth making people suffer. and you don't care. why should you?
your life is all about you and no one else. survival of the fittest.
there are no life preservers. there are no emergency exits. don't look down
or you'll see the floating bodies of those who didn't make it
those whose hands slipped, those who despaired
and then you might have a moment of guilt
for your self preservation in a time of crisis.
the words sting hollow in my consciousness- "it's not my problem"
and "if i close my eyes i can't see it happening" tears my heart in two.
it's days like this i wonder why i stopped cutting, because at least
the blood reminded me i was alive and breathing.
we are meant to be robotic in our programming of a better world.
hold hands and sing while cities burn in third world countries.
it's not our problem. it's not our problem.
it's a game of survivor and apparently we're all islands.
this reality is shown in black and white- save yourself
or no one else will. it's a dog eat dog world
and even the meek pick their teeth with the bones of the less fortunate.
