“The Mad Hatter – that’s me
I am who I choose to be
I see what I choose to see
And so I am able to be free.”
One day whilst sipping high tea
The mad hatter sat down with three
One was Mr Rabbit
Two was Mr Doormouse
But who was Mr three?
Sitting at the opposite end
Was someone who did pretend
Not Mr Rabbit
Not Mr Doormouse
This person his face did defend
Mr Hatter did not notice him
It seemed as if his soul was dim
Uneasy was Mr Rabbit
Uneasy too was Mr Doormouse
There was silence except for a soundless hymn
When eventually Mr Hatter Had seen this man
Did he jump out of his seat and spill the jam
He gazed at Mr Rabbit
He gazed at Mr Doormouse
Eventually his eyes rested on this mystery man
“Who be you and why do you be?”
But Mad Hatter could no answer see
Nor did Mr Rabbit
Neither did Mr Doormouse
So he just sat there, this Mr Three
Not soon afterwards did Mr Three rise
And Mad Hatter had a surprise
As did Mr Rabbit
As too did Mr Doormouse
Mr Three had come to claim his prize
With a bony finger pointedly laid bare
Did Mr Three the tea-table scare
Afraid was Mr Rabbit
Alarmed was Mr Doormouse
And all poor Mr Hatter could do was stare
In a matter of moments did Mr Hatter feel
In his heart blood vessels did congeal
Scared was Mr Rabbit
Terrified was Mr Doormouse
And soon the Mad Hatter was not real
In a flash and with a grin did Mr Three leave
Then did Mr Hatter on the floor his body heave
Sad was Mr Rabbit
Sad too was Mr Doormouse
And with a constant hymn did the Mad Hatter this world leave.
“The Mad Hatter – that was me
I was who I choose to be
I saw what I choose to see
And so I am able to be free.”
