I Remember...
...sitting around a big fire
wishing we had some beer
and talking about all the things
we wanted to do
and wanted to be
and I couldn't decide which
was more captivating:
the embers floating up from
the fire
or the fire throwing sparks of
light off your long red hair...
...my little brother telling
you that you looked like you
were 12 when in fact you were
16...
...you kicking my little brother's
ass for saying that...
...driving back from P.I.
at 3 am behind Vinnie's van
and his back tire kicking some
kind of roadkill up across
the hood of your sister's car
and scaring the living hell out
of us...
...sitting on the tailgate of my
old Ford with tears in my eyes
while you sang that Jewel song
to me for at least half an hour...
...not wanting that night to end...
...ever...
...riding up Boatramp Road in the
back of Jeff's truck singing
"ASSHOLAMIO" at the top of my
lungs while you laughed like a loon
and the neighbors looked
at us like we belonged
in a mental institution...
...your mom escorting me and Jeff
home at midnight after the fire
department came and put out our
bonfire...
...going to the beach and spending
hours in the water just holding each
other and wishing that the world would
go away for a little while longer
so I wouldn't have to go back to
Bosnia...
...the look on your face when Jeff
told you I had gotten married while
I was away...
...how my heart felt like it was going
to just quit when I saw that look...
...how much I wanted to hold you in my
arms or maybe hold your hand or at least
tell you how much I regretted that day
and how much I wished then
and still do now
that I could go back and say "HELL NO!"
when that judge asked me if I would...
...how much I wished then
and still do now
that I could bring you with me
everywhere, because I never tire
of your company...
...how much I craved then
and still do now
that kiss I never stole...
