I ran away
one forth of July
hopped in your car
went for a ride
we ran in the rain
tasting the dirty air
on our tongue
you were wild
but strange
but I loved you anyway
I think back now
about the hotel parking lot
laughing at license plates
of places we'd never go
when you saw that bird
that couldn't fly away
and you had me catch it
and carry it
for you to save
I wonder
if I was just another bird
'cause in the car
we'd touch heads
as the rain poured down
and you'd laugh
at my fumbling hands
and when we made love
three nights in a row
you'd smile
and tell me how good it was
you wanted to marry me
carry me
all words on the wind
as you went back home
and told me I was a dirty little whore
"You made your bed
now lie in it"
is all that you'd say
you thought I was like the bird you saved
that couldn't fly away
we'll I've mended
and patched up my holes
you'll have to do more
to fill
your bottomless soul
