Enemy Lines; A Month Later

Midnight steadied her horse, Moonlight, in the Valley. All was silent, giving her time to reflect. In the month Silver ahd been kidnapped, there had been three very brief "conversations" between husband and wife. Silver was, for the most part, unharmed. A week ago, Midnight had recieved a message. Midnight was to come alone (but armed) to the Valley. Unbeknownst to the enemy, Midnight's troop was scattered within hearing range. She smiled briefly, thinking of them, so adamant she not go alone. The skies grew dark and it started to rain lightly. Midnight sat regally on her horse, one hand on the dagger that rested on her hip. Now it begins, she thought. It's now or never. And, for the first time, Midnight noticed the green eyes watching her from a bush on the other side.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Quatro stepped out of the bush and stared at his sister. The last month had been hell for her, he knew. She had confided everything to him, and it had always taken him all his might not to laugh at her. But she had survived, and was stronger than ever. A stirring of regret rose in Quatro's heart, but he pushed it back. Just look at her, he thought, sitting straight-backed on her horse, looking powerful and fearless. Quatro couldn't help the swell of pride he felt for his baby sister. She looks like our father before a battle, he thought sadly. No more silly emotions, damnit! he admonished himself. It was time. And he stepped up to Midnight. "Hello, baby sis"
-----------------------------------------------------------
From a place unknown, the true King and Queen of Rolken Castle watched. "He's too strong for her, she'll never win. Not with all the other distractions" the Queen worried as she saw the ghosts from all the past battles surround brother and sister and again began to fight. The Queen watched the ghost-battles rage and kept one eye on her children. "Don't worry dear, Mid is strong and very capable of a fight. Especially if she's fighting for her Kingdom and/or her husband" the King soothed. Both parents gasped as they watched Midnight fly off her horse, dagger out. The battle had begun.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Quatro?" Midnight asked, already knowing. "Why, sis, you know that already". She frowned. "You can give him back. He did nothing to you". "Oh but he did. He took my kingdom away from me." "No, you left your kingdom. You wanted to be a warrior, not a King. Father let you do what you wanted! You ungrateful traitor" Midnight cried out, eyes blazing. She was so angry she never saw the sword coming.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"NOOO!" Silver yelled as he aw the sword pierce Midnight's throat. Over and over, Silver threw himself at the door, trying to get out. He wanted to save his wife, damnit! "LET ME GO" he roared. "Let them battle this out. It'll all be OK, I promise you, Silver" came the late King's voice. Silver jumped. Resignedly he watched the fight and wished for his wife.
-----------------------------------------------------------
I must kill her! She'll ruin everything! Quatro thought viciously. "It's my kingdom! MINE! You'll never have it!" Quatro screeched. His words were met with silence. The ghosts were still fighting, like Quatro and Midnight were, Kingdom against Kingdom.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Hours went by, dagger against sword, sword against dagger. Both were tired, getting sluggish. Quatro found a space and thrust his sword into Midnight's stomache. Midnight cried out in pain as she saw the blood, thought of the new unborn child she carried, and had just lost. "You betrayed me! I know your secret Quatro, you're too obvious". Midnight sank to the ground as the sword flashed through her again. Her vision faded but she pushed the blackness back and knocked her brother down. "You killed my child!" Midnight cried wildly, "I'll kill you! Just like you killed our PARENTS"! Using the last of her strength, she plunged the daggar into Quatro's heart. And she fell to the blood-soaked ground and gave up to the blackness.
-----------------------------------------------------------
The Rolken troops rushed forward. A few men went to Quatro. "Still alive" one frowned. They lifted him up and carried him away as the others swarmed around Midnight. Freed, Silver ran to Midnight. And dropped to his kness, crying. "Mid! I'm here, baby. Don't leave me! I love you. I need you. Midnight Star Rolken, don't die" Silver sobbed, holding the motionless Midnight.
-----------------------------------------------------------
"Mother! Father!" Midnight cried joyously. The King and Queen turned around in surprise. Leaping for her daughter, the Queen hugged her tightly. The King cried out "MIDNIGHT! You're not supposed to be here! If you're here, then you're dead. Go back now, before its too late! Silver needs you, Rolken Castle needs you. Quatro isn't dead. He'll be back. NOW GO!". And with that, he sent his only daughter, his baby, back to earth.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Midnight awoke in Silver's arms, still bleeding heavily, still in the Valley. She gently touched her husbands cheek and he looked down at her. And buried his face in her hair, crying in relief. Lifting his face, he looked at her. " I love you. Please don't ever leave me again. I need you too much. Y-You were dead but...now you're not" Silver looked puzzled. "Mother and Father sent me back. It wasn't my time yet" Midnight rasped, trying to speak. " I almost killed him. He killed my baby again". "It's OK Mid. He'll never hurt you again. I promise". Safe in Silver's arms, Midnight believed him. Everything was going to be OK now. For a while, anyway.
