And so the king of shadows
Comes from the blossoms of earth
So from my bosom he plucks
The precious warmth of day

Down into the pits of Hades goes
With lack of joy or mirth
My lovely daughter now entwined and stuck
Until anew arises my beloved Kore

Let the fountain of the earth cease its flow
Let neither flower nor beast give birth
For my heart has been cleft and struck
As down below she now stays.

Tasting fruit that was unknown
Three months let man be cursed
For the tides of death shall run amuck
Until sweet Persephone drives my woes away.

The icy winds spread and feed my woes
Of infinite dimensions and girth
Each year my daughter he abducts
So let now the earth fall gray.
