across the cafeteria, guarded eyes wander
into the faces of those who shun her
afraid to love and be loved in turn
in her heart the hateful words still burn
in the classroom all they see is unbrushed hair
they never look deeper into her despair
they teach crime and teen violence
but they'll never reach her from their high limbs
they never see her heart beaten and broken
never her soul eaten and open.
