Constriction. Than a stabbing pain coursing through his chest, frantic breathing.
The white spots dance before his eyes, changing into different scenes of his life.
Each one taking on a life of it’s own, running amuck…
Standing in his back yard covered in dirt, a dusty baseball bat laying on the ground
beside him. Bright sunlight beating down on his head. A golden haired angel brought
him a cold glass of lemonade, the glass slick with condensation. The electric shock
when their fingers touch. And a single long glance between them lasting a lifetime.
Years later standing in the rain waiting for the bus to arrive. He scoots over on
the bench to make room for a young lady to sit. Her bag covered in gold and red
flowers. Hair down her back cascading in golden curls. Smiling over at him, a twinkle
in her eye. A spark of knowing passes between them. Something so familiar.
Last week when he was at the grocery store wandering the aisles looking for the
coffee he rounded the end aisle to carelessly and bumped another cart. “Sorry about
that. I didn’t see you coming.” Their eyes meet, her hair shorter now but still
curly. The gold faded to a pale yellow, and her skin not quite a tight. Wrinkles
from a life of smiling caress her face. She smiles for him again, and that knowing
spark pass between them. “Perfectly alright.” He watches as she pushes her cart
down the next aisle, wondering if it could be the same woman he had met before.
Blindly groping for his pills, stiff fingers fumbling around on the nightstand.
Laying on their side he can just make out the bottle through the pain. Laying just
beyond his reach.
