You could tell that she dyes her hair
Before you see her driver's license picture
Before you see her painted nails
(white, with black hearts)
or the design on her shoes
And before you've seen her white belt
Or her purse strap catches your eye
Before you see the ring in her boyfriend's nose
that matches the one through her lip
or the holes in his ears you could pass a finger through
Before you study his facial hair
just beneath the edge of his jaw
or the same black hooded sweatshirt they both wear
Before you think about the stop they got on at
(the popular Logan Square)
or the way she moves her hands
or before you imagine her life
(though not much comes to mind)
She has the hair that fat white girls wear
when they know they can be cool too.
You know she's dyed her hair.
