"They" are told when where and how
but never given a reason why
just a likeness of a person
just a shadow
a vague shape cast upon the ground
walked on and over looked
identical to the rest

no depth
..
no voice
..
no face
..
no fealings
..
lined up in a row and forgotten

"They" are what you read about in books or see or tv
"They" are just fiction
"They" don't exist

now i know better.

this is very interesting...and the ending was a loaded gun. this poem fascinates me, and it's so devastatingly portrayed.

you nailed it. put into words something I never really wanted to, but you did it and it was awesome.

You're giving me the perspective I only hear about when my soldier writes home. It makes me...I dunno...feel something. I'm not sure what it is. ' "They" don't exist' except for inside the ones "they" leave behind.

And you tell me that you're no poet. You're Such a silly, silly boy, mikey. Erica

one, you misspelled feelings and two this poem is making me want to write a response poem. This is a very powerful point of view and very insightful

This was an unusual perspective - always a treat. How does it feel to be one of "them"? To fight the battles someone else decides need to be fought? To be, in the most literal sense, a pawn? Wouldn't you rather be a "knight," or a "bishop"?

wow. good write

On Wednesday December 8th, 2004, MEATGRINDER MAN (510) writes:
This was heartfelt, and I'm glad you "know better". Without you "soldiers", where would us so-called "other people" be? Would we have a right to exist "without you"? Great write. Thank you.

wonderfully said!

I know many soldiers, and I know they are people. This was a great write, since it does indeed hold true for many people.
