blues and oranges swirl and collide
with various shades of pink and grey
in a methodical yet
chaotic dance of beauty

as I watch this pastel creation
paint it self upon the sky
I realize
that my time with friends I consider family is short

at most

I realize that soon I will return
to a place full of pain and anguish
death and sorrow
hatred and fear

but instead of feeling sad scared
worried or alone

I turn from my realization
and enjoy what very well may be
the last sunset I am at peace

with

my self

There are few things more comforting than a peaceful soldier who knows how to gaze... this reminds me a little of the Tao Te Ching's statement that a soldier should attend war as a man who attends a funeral - with dignity, respect, and a sense of sorrow..

Live simply, that others may simply live. It's a difficult task at times, but well worth it. Thank you.
