(My recent letter to the editor of the Chicago Tribune)

Dear Editor,

My purpose in writing this letter is to express my distaste for the way media, television talk show hosts in particular, have affected democracy.

Certain entertainment media hosts have managed to obtain respect and support from millions of people across the world. Widely acknowledged as the most successful in this
field is Oprah Winfrey. And rightly so, she has worked hard to get where she is and she has done great things for lots of people. In fact, I had quite a lot of respect for this talented role model myself. But her open backing of Barack Obama is done in blatant disregard for her influence, or the likelier scenario, because of her influence and in disregard for the ideals that this country is founded on.

Am I accusing the American people of blindly following a television personality? Not as such. But one look at the way the markets change when Oprah has something to say will tell all. Her book club produces consistent best sellers, with all copies flying from the shelves within a couple of hours of her announcing it on the show. Companies love her “Favorite Things” show because it’s better than advertising. If Oprah likes it, It must be good. And in the long run, that’s just fine. Let her sell your products. Let her help get information out on new treatments for disease, on hot topics in the world. Let her entertain us all every afternoon. However, to abuse her talent and ability in order to further her own political agenda is not only unethical, it is unpatriotic.

I have no problems with Senator Obama or his campaign for President, except this misuse of power. As one of the most influential women in the world and fully aware of her powers of persuasion with the American audience, Oprah has committed a brutal attack on the idea of educated voting. Her support for Obama will greatly affect the decisions of many viewers prone to trust and respect her viewpoints despite little to no knowledge on the other candidates. And though he may be a great choice for Ms. Winfrey and he may stand firm on the topics that matter most in her own life, there is a curtain over the voting booth for a reason. It was her responsibility as a respected public figure to, if anything, use her standing in order to inform her viewers of the advantages and disadvantages, the platforms of each candidate so that they could cast their vote for the runner who best fits their needs. That is the only purpose our voting system serves.

I would never impede on Ms. Winfrey's right to support whichever nominee she chooses. Let her vote for Obama. I might vote for him myself, who knows. But allowing her public support for one presidential candidate is bordering on autocratic, if not magisterial.

As a 21 year old, middle class female I understand the desire that young women have for a role model like Oprah, not just young women, lots of women and she has earned their admiration. But when she uses these good deeds and her personal clout to manipulate the voting public, she goes much too far.

Acknowledging that the sentence for treason (I believe it is still capital punishment) is not quite equal to this particular crime, in no way am I suggesting she be arrested for this. But I am hoping she will open her eyes and apologize to her audience for this slap in the face of democracy and perhaps reverse the damage that has already been done. This is one topic that shouldn’t be public.
Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
JH
Pasadena, TX

p.s.
Thank you to the lovely sIo for the helpful criticism and editing.

And thank you to my lovely Darun for helping out a poor little girl with the proper use of the word "hanged". Tell me Darun, would it be proper to say "He must be very well hung"? ;)

people that actively persuade large flocks of minions should not be campaigning for politicians.... Religious groups included. besides that dumb bitch introduced 'Dr.' Phil to the world... her judgement is questionable.

Does this mean such people, celebrities in general, or a particular breed?, should not campaign at all? Maybe we shouldn't allow them to hold office? Though I like the Terminator in CA... I think she's taking a chance (a small one) by engaging in politics... isn't that why many celebs choose to remain silent? Look what happened to the Dixie Chicks (not that I listen to them) and after all the bs decayed, they were still right.

that is the ONLY way to vote. Serious people should not be in power :)

I agree. I'm not talking about telling her to shut up and sit down, that celebrities don't belong in politics. I'm saying that with the sway she has over the public, she should rightly be using it to INFORM not to PERSUADE. Voice your opinions on world topics. on issues. that can promote awareness. then just let the people choose the one they think fits their needs. its not difficult. its the right thing to do. and this country has been led blindly long enough. let the fucking country get off their metaphorical asses (and literal ones) and THINK their way through an election for a change.

haha... Oprah is hardly the saint people think she is.... all her 'charitable' offering are tax write-offs the same shit every other rich asshole does to keep from paying taxes. excellent write Jes:)

woot!! ding-ding and smarty pants points for elisa! Damn, I'm glad someone said it...I still think she has every right to campaign for whoever she wants...just like every other celebrity and all the rest of us "nobodies"...I don't have to agree with what she's doing to think she has every right to do it...kinda like going to church, eh? I think the sheeple should open their eyes, but they've every right to keep them closed if that's what they want. ;)

You make a good point, I must have misunderstood... but don't you think she'd have to become informed on many of the topics, then... I mean, that takes some work, does it not? The way I see it, she's openly throwing capital his way, whereas others just contribute monetarily. Both are essential to the process, but she's being most open and up-front... on another hand, I think she'd fuck things up if she started trying to inform the public... best she just voices her opinions and offers her support. On a more theoretical line... where is the distinction between information and persuasion when it comes to controversial issues that have no clear right or wrong?

We're BEGGING for change in office. That change MUST begin withe the voters. And voter education is the ONLY solution. How about she spend a few million dollars hanging billboards or making commercials that accurately compare the candidates' different stances on global and domestic issues? there's something productive she can certainly afford to do. Without making an ass of herself in the process. Discernment.

On Friday January 4th, 2008, Ainsof (1809) writes:
I like that idea... but billboards often reduce platforms to tid bits and slogans... not all the candidates have discerning positions on the issues, and people tend to vote as much on the personality of the candidate as on the platform... so all of this makes the process fairly complicated... I like those who openly stand by their choice more than those who secretly contribute lots of money... at least then I know where people stand and to whom I'm giving my money.

On Friday January 4th, 2008, Ainsof (1809) writes:
If people are such mindless followers of a personality or celebrity that they will vote for whomever that celebrity supports, then more celebrities should openly support Obama... evidently there are too many adults left behind. She has her own show, she should be able to voice her opinions on it. I hope more celebrities get involved in the political process, maybe more people will become active in the process and we will be able to get rid of this aristocratic republic that brags to all the world of democracy... maybe we could even break outside the financial barricade that prevents us from having just one more choice than Fascism--i.e., get beyond the 2 party system. But that's my opinion and maybe I shouldn't voice it just because I can... If one does not exercise one's freedoms, do they really exist? Even if they do, somehow, how long will they last?

I agree with Sharon and also think that with "reality tv" becoming more and more popular that exactly what you describe happening will become based more and more on "flavor of the week" opinions. It's sad. Thanks for sharing.

here, here. . ive always thought it an abuse of power and sway over an autonomous mind of people in general, this deliberate backing. ..genius idea; hope it gets REALLY heard, not just read.

since the founding of this country, media, celebrities and the clergy have been telling people who to vote for..and the gutless masses listen precisely because they do not want to learn about the candidates: they want someone to tell them who to vote for...it's despicable and disrespectful and people eat it up like candy, because no one ever bothered to teach them to respect their own intelligence to make their own decisions...I don't think it's treasonous..there's absolutely nothing to prevent it, in fact, there's something in the law that's in complete support of it: it's part of the 1st Amendment of the Constitution "Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech or of the press..." You don't have to like it; it's her Constitutional right to say she supports him and campaign for him.

On Thursday January 3rd, 2008, glasshouse (803) writes:
I don't have any desire to stop her from saying what she said. Thats why I said she ultimately should not be hung. Freedom of speech IS her right, but just because you CAN speak freely doesn't mean you SHOULD. And she should be discerning enough to know when to speak specifically and when to speak broadly. If she truly believes Obama is the best candidate, then she should have no problem presenting equal information on all of them and trusting her audience to make the decision for themselves. Thats all. But I definitely see where you're coming from. There isn't anything I can really do to keep people from following shit like that, if they thought about it, they wouldnt do it but we all know they usually don't. Doesn't mean I won't use my own freedom of speech to call her out on it. haha. Thanks for reading, mama. --Jes

Thanks for sharing your point of view. I am sure there are others that will promote their candidate(s) of choice also. I know this to often happen particularly with hot top issues and religious leaders as well. Personally, for those that are not aware(sadly)...the promotion of attaining more knowledge, through things such as stating there are debates, fact checking organizations, etc. and that this is a personal opinion...may be a proper or nice thing to do. Give the other candidates some credence. I did not see the broadcast, but would hope she had/has the savvy to make some sort of disclaimer. But I am with Sharon in that she has the right to express her opinion, just as you have.
