He comes, always when I sleep
Tall, dark and handsome
With a cool hat
I like that.
But nothing I can keep.
He comes, when finally you’ve gone away
And comforts me after what you did,
He knows always what to say
He knows always how to keep the nightmares at bay.
But nothing that’ll stay.
He comes, as soon as it’s dark
But only stays till dawn,
Wish he’d stay forever
Wish we could be together.
But nothing leaves a mark.
He comes when he hears me cry
Murmurs, soothes away the pain,
Can’t he stay the day with me?
Can’t he see what I have to see?
But nothing if the sun is high.
He comes, with warmth is his breath
Then I’m safe to dream
If only there were another
Someone else to smother.
But nothing comforts like death.
