The final curtain
as I exit left
In an unceremonious parting of ways
No going to pieces or a final embrace
Just a deliberate turn of the doorknob
and the realization that I will never hold you again.
I can no longer think about who you run to
When the night comes.
Another song of hopeless dreams stricken from the playlist
Of a diminishing repertoire of tolerable tracks.
What I used to find sexy and inviting
Was now a reminder of another’s man conquest
The rules of engagement changed along the way;
And tears too weary and meaningless
To offer any comfort for a passion lost.
We’ve loved before and we’ll love again
And time will fade all memories;
Your azure eyes reflecting the dying embers
That turned to dust when the spark was gone.
And my life seems meaningless now,
A shadow existence in search of another you;
And I just can’t seem to get a grip,
A haunted fear of a love undeserved.
The best of me
The worst of me
Trapped in a shell
That only you could break.
A onetime Merlin stripped of his powers
Over you
And I’m not over you
Two hearts barely beating to different drums;
The indecision that tore us apart
In a chronic reminder of wasted years.
I long for you
I mourn for us
And I wake to the uncertainty of moving on
In a bitter reminder of life without you
And a future mired in a wasted past.
There can be only one
Love like ours
And myself to blame for giving you up.
Forgive me, my darling
Find comfort in knowing you’ll love again
And the truth that someone still loves you
And always will.

*exhales* This literally took my breath away. This piece is overflowing with emotion and tragedy and passion and... gah! How do you do it? I've missed your work so much, and years later, I find that it still holds the same power over me.
