a friend once gave me a couple marbles
told me it was important not to lose them
one was all white, newish and smooth
rather shiny in the sun
the other, an old chipped piece of deep purple glass
opaque and barely round
i'm thinking about this in the high desert in early spring
where the sharp wind turns the slanted sun's beams into ice-cream
in the high air it's hard to catch your breath
snow at the feet of sujaros
and wide open skies
wide open skies
