[I wrote this poem on July 7, 2006; the day Syd Barrett went away... perhaps he really left a much longer time ago, between 1967 & 1972 ... anyways, I really like his song, “See Emily Play” (as well as others). There is no real connection other than the name...]

“Emily tries but misunderstands, ah ooh.” ~Syd Barrett

“Eyes Of Emily”

She had eyes; were they
Real, or were
They someone else’s?
You see her in that swollen room
How she stares eternally into
Her silver mirror ...
Sometimes, when she drinks a glass
Of water,
She might look out the window
Into the play yard,
And we see her eyes;
Those eyes that do not seem to
Belong to her.
Is she wearing someone else’s eyes,
We wonder?
She scares us,
So we never invite her to come down
Stairs to play;
We think if we were to see those eyes
Too close, we would die.

Forty years later, she still stares
Into that Otherworld
With those ever so young eyes...

i love the endless yet ephemeral feel of this; ghosts and questions, seeking, quiet melancholy desire, the attraction/fear of the unknown, and the yearning for the Something More, Something Else. Marvellous piece.

a melancholic masterpiece that speaks of obsession and desire and need and fantasy; someone somewhere knows this 'emily'; genious.ly/insanely powerful .ness

I'm in love with this poem. It has a certain mystique to it that speaks of both innocence and insanity. Superb.

As soon as I saw the title, I thought of Emily Dickinson. I was surprised to find out that Syd Barrett's death was the impetus for this piece. Even so, the image of Emily Dickinson stayed with me as I read.

Actually, it was perfect. The silver mirror image worked seamlessly. "Those eyes that do not seem to belong to her" - slightly frightening image. "she still stares into that Otherworld" - more frightening still.

Aye, I thought the same as Jay. Describes so many Emilies, some of them not even named Emily...

Written as only you could write it! It is a shame that he passed on but we will forever have his music, his legacy. Great piece Jon. As if you could write anything other than? *hugs* ;)

That was cool. That guy was a hell of a song writer. I really enjoyed this refreshing take. Very stirring.
