I will ask of the World,
“Where are my dreams?”
-They have gone to the child,
Where they stay asleep.-
I will ask of my dreams,
“Why do you yet sleep?”
-We cannot bear the world.
We cannot bear the world.-
I have asked where both,
Where both have gone and why.
-We are keeping what is left of us.-
That is how they both reply.
I ask of my body,
“Am I just a figure?”
-Among the numbers, just
A figure among the numbers, yes.-
I ask of God,
“Where is my spirit gone?”
-It is wandering among the others,
Among the others wandering yet.-
I ask of my spirit,
“Why do you yet wander?”
-I have forgotten what I am,
And God forgot where he has placed me.
The Earth rises toward its end,
The Body has erased me,
Either you or I, dreaming-
One, or the other dreams of me,
Like the sky dreams of its clouds,
Or the waves dream of the sea.-
“Are we not real?”
-I do not know, but you are asking.
I do not know, but I have answered-
