I pause, poised to descend
Considering such visions as the spirits wend
Touching the banister of burnished wood
Reflecting a world so little understood
Shadows dance in everchanging night
While whisper-figures fall and bleed into my sight
Steps lay numbered as the casing falls away
I pray focus though my memory fights to stray
The winds of past and parallel
Breathe past my ears in tales of something more than hell
And shuddering I cannot fail to see
That heaven too consists of such as these
/and I fall/
I see behind me, a rising lie's ascent
And I wonder at the scenes and all that life has meant
My eyes grow heavy though I cry to stay and see
And feelings grow unreal at the door in front of me
Openings encompassed in mind's most distant dreams
For every moment envisioned reigns evermore supreme
/and I fade/
Into this mystic's land that leaves behind the day
And shatters into sighs when at last we reengage
A world that most believe
Is secondary to all that seems
To all that grows without the womb of soul
Though I've always known -
/and I will always know/
This is the song that breathes me whole.
