I hear water dripping
somewhere
damn leaky faucet
tap
tap
tap
it seems to be taunting me
tap
tap
tap
it's never-ending litany
drilling into my Jack Daniels
fogged brain
tap
tap
tap
I set in search of it
peering through the smokiness
filling the room
from a cigarette
burned hours ago
air stale with the stench of it now
my mouth filled with it's ashy taste
tap
tap
tap
I have found my demon
I twist the nob on the tub faucet to stem
the dripping from the showerhead
but alas
it won't turn anymore
tap
tap
tap
the headache explodes
I curse it
and get creative
grabbing a starch-stiff
hotel washcloth
and wrap it tightly over
the head
the tapping has stopped
I stumble back to bed
and start in on my comatose
once again
and from a distance I hear...
tap
tap
tap
damn leaky faucet.
