She wears self-pity like a coat
And self-hatred as a hat
And sometimes ---
When momentarily freed
From the weight and obstruction
She can look upon herself and see:
Tilted eyes
Long, sloping neck
Dark, twisted curls
Her own visage
Leaving her unharmed
But then, hat and coat are donned
And she is, once again,
Ugly to her eye and
Bruised by her image
