My heart she was chained,
And bound, late one night.
And she wailed til she learned
There was no end in sight.
Then she casually sighed
And took up her place;
Resigned acceptance became
An expression of the face.
Until, in small pity
My heart was released,
And tended and bathed,
And given great feast.
Now (back in her shackles,
Which are ne'er gone for good)
She cries of new tortures
Which have not been wrought,
And burns of such hunger
As no feast should have brought.
