Sometimes I won't remember you anymore.
Time will pass,
months and years,
And you will slip so
surely away from me.
You really and truly
won't be coming back.
Sometimes I'll want to say:
"Okay! The game's over!
Come out! This isn't fun anymore!"
But more and more surly
the immediacy will escape me,
and the last time you walked
through the door will be
a long time ago.
You'll fade into memory
and legend;
Into the words we'll use to
tell stories.
But "fade" will be too harsh,
too painful a word.
It'll be like
having a tooth pulled.
I'll feel those threads of
flesh stretching and
snapping
and then all
I'll be able to think
about is the
h o l e
in my mouth.
