The world melts away
voices of now faceless strangers
fade into a dull white noise
the Earth stops spinning
and you and I are floating
out in space alone
contained within our own
conception
no reception
everything else is void
we share the air we breathe
and feel nothing but each other
when we're together
we lay down entwined
each dreaming a dream
they run into themselves
and combine
I take a little bit of yours
you take a little bit of mine
we flirt with plans and hopes
careful never to promise
but pinning these whispers
of tomorrow
on the stars of tonight
when we're together
we idealize and realize
filling space around us
with words not said
both afraid in different ways
to scare the other away
we'll each reach the same conclusions
in due time
meanwhile one of us reaches
the finish line
and waits patiently for the other
while reconsidering themselves
answers stare us right in the face
yet emotions and jaded dispassions
give further weight and result in
confusion
when we're together
neither lets on
we just go through the motions
both dissatisfied in each other
I know exactly why I am
but for fear you're still figuring it out
I'll close my mouth
except to kiss yours to silence
when you speak words I'd rather not hear
we never stay long afterwards
that'd be an experiment
would we expect anything of one another
something lurks in the unknown
dare one be surprised
when we're together
let's not ruin a good thing while it's good
and when it isn't
maybe then we'll take a chance
to examine the broken pieces
and figure out if it can be mended
we could catch the leak before it breaks
at the risk of having to tear up the foundation
but we're too unwilling to let go of what we have
because things never make sense
when we're together
but at least they have more meaning
than when we're apart
