I was only able to write this for one reason. He knows who he is. It's not perfect, but it'll do for now. Maybe the next one will be better. Then again, maybe not. Regardless, thank you.

---------------------------------------------

I watched the sun set today.
It reminded me of you.
I felt so safe and comfortable
standing there in the light.
Nothing could possibly go wrong.
Then the sun went down below the horizon
and vanished from my sight.
I stood there for a while
willing it to come back.
It never did.
How could something so beautiful
disappear so suddenly?
I lost all hope.
In everything.

You did this to me.

I once felt so safe
with you by my side.
Nothing could possibly go wrong.
Then you quickly drifted away
and vanished from my life
with a loud bang and an empty shotgun shell.
I stood there for a while,
a year, maybe two,
willing you to come back.
But you never did.
How could someone so wonderful
leave me just like that?
All hope was gone.
Buried along with you.

It's been nearly four years now,
and only today did I realize
you are my sunset.

I only thought you were gone.
But, if I close my eyes tight enough,
I can still see those magnificent colors.
I can still feel the warmth on my face.

I can still feel you in my heart.
I can still see you standing next to me,
guiding me along.
Hope wasn't gone.
It was hiding behind my tears.
The mere memory of you
brought it back again.

You will always be with me.
And I'll always remember
My Sunset.

your poetry is so beautiful when inspired by love rather than anger. i hope you will have much more of the former so we can delight in your vivid captures of moments in time.

Wow...this is so serene and calmly spoken...when such feelings are provoked by loss normally one isn't so at peace...this is an exquisite peace...you've come to terms with it. Wow. Beautiful.
