He rides toward the setting sun
Standard hanging limp in the absent breeze

Alone
No great host for this march

It took a midnight departure to escape the guards’ questions
Let the others think what they will

This was to be the way of it
A lost knight on a grail-less quest

His conquered lands: no home
No comfort for his wounded heart

Every dream hung over the virgin valley
Raped and tortured to distant fond memory

The crimson sky reflects off tarnished armor
A bloody sword hangs from his side

His weary horse: uncooperative
Yanking reins toward a babbling brook

Finding no comfort in the castle keep
This brave knight seeks sanctuary

A protective shelter to regain his strength
This battle has left him with none

For his meager gain
The paladin lost it all

Now there is nothing but a lonely ride ahead
An endless pursuit of something once close

The throbbing of his wounds keeps him from collapse
Sleep has been elusive for high near a week

Strength of heart creates a weakness of arm
Desire leads to an undermining of reason

This trail he follows
Hoping it leads to solace or peace

Only knowing, here is not where he belongs
There is a warm haven somewhere out there

The months of toil and tribulation
Draws into question what he truly seeks

The balance of gain over loss is shifting
Tilting drastically in the wrong direction

Surrendering his every gain
He risks his life to find that joy

Chasing the setting sun seems more practical
Than chasing the heart of a timid maiden

There is no doubt in him
Only conviction and patience

Though many offered their swords for his cause
Saddle sores and mosquito bites are his only companions

He could not explain he needed no sword
To capture what he was after

What sword and lance could not champion
Stalwartness and devotion must

If only this warrior knew how to wield those tools
Never has he been a squire to such things

Perhaps he could learn the ways of the jester
Become the harlequin she calls to influence a smile

Very colorful, ethereal, mystical... an enjoyable read. The jester at the end was good stuff... good ol' jesters.
