prom night 2008
my daughter is ready to go
she looks beautiful

she better
that damn dress
cost almost five hundred dollars

i tell her
there is something i want to say
before she leaves

she rolls her eyes
in that way
that only 18 year old girls can do

because
she thinks
i am going to wax poetic

i'm not
poetry is about metaphors and allusions
this is straight talk

i tell her
a lot of things are going to happen tonight
lives will change

there will be
make ups and break ups
and at least one girl will end up knocked up

because
she's so naive that she believes him
when he says you can't get pregnant the first time

i thought about
how i blame the parents for that
as i handed my daughter a condom

there's going to be
broken heels and broken hearts
that might ruin the moment but won't ruin a life

i'm keeping the phone with me all night
there'll be no questions if you call for a ride
not a word about the alcohol on your breath

i don't care what you do
as long as it isn't anything
that starts out fun

and ends
on the dedication page
of the yearbook of the class of 2009

I just watched a program on prom night nightmares so to speak. Being a mom of a young teenager my heart goes out to you. I think it's really never to early to be honest, but most importantly, approachable. I hope she had a magical night, free of regrets and most of all-fun.

As a young person myself... I really think more parents should go about it this way.

And I dont say this because I would like to get up the girls dress - I say that because I saw way too many of my classmates a few years ago make the mistake, get messed up, then they were to scared to get help, to ask for that ride and it ruined their entire college dreams, ruined their dreams of becoming a Doctor, a Teacher, a Lawyer, a Nurse, and most of all a respected young woman.

On Sunday May 4th, 2008, Adaml (243) writes:
Those that do make the mistake should [have]not be[en] looked down upon and be alone; but society should have helped them, saved them, and not condemned them the second they took that first drink - we all knew it would happen so why do we just turn away as say "Not my kid" ... and then it does.

this made me cry for some very odd reason. my mom gives me this kind of talks all the time. and i know that when and if i ever have a daughter, i'll talk to her about that kind of stuff too. and i should know a lot about teen pregnancies. there hasn't been one woman in my family (moms side) that hasn't had a baby when she was in her teens. i hope you and your daughter the best, she's a diamond. -mars

that's amazing. my mother never gave me any of those speeches when i was off to the prom, and formal. but i cannot express to you how many people at my high school ended up being that statistic. pregnant, hurt (in more ways than heartbreak), or the spotlight at a funeral. this was touching, and i agree with narcissa, i'm so glad that there are parents that care what their children do.

this is so right. oh how crazy to think of how parents who dont do this have kids who fuck up then dont tellthere kids. time to break the cycle, great write

most parents just project their fuck ups on the kid and slap a 'good parenting' label on for justification. excellent use of restraint. good piece.

To be a mother in the 21st Century. I certainly don't envy you, and pray I will never have to read/write a piece like this to my future children.
