how does poetry come to you?
mine comes
in the shower
so i have to rush
to put thoughts to paper
before soap washes them away
so sometimes
poetry makes me stinky
other times
the words come on the cusp of sleep
dredging up consciousness
to write them down
before they dissolve in dream
so sometimes
poetry steals my sleep
other times
verses form
when i am doing my hair
and i have to stop
and write them down
before their edges are dulled
by the mundane details of the day
so sometimes
poetry means a bad hair day
but in the end
i will always choose stinky, sleep deprived, and bad hair
over a day without poetry
