"No, Thank You Officer..." by Echoes of Orpheus

He dominated my doorway,
His authoritative aura
Preceded him to my steps

"Good evening sir, May
I have a few moments of
Your time to ask some questions?"

I knew that whatever he was
Canvasing my neighborhood for now,
I wouldn't be able to help him with
But what was I to say... no?

"Of course officer..."

In a strong voice he went on to say
Something about a random act of
Violence in the area,
Involving teenagers, about my age.
Something about a woman being beaten
To near death

"Do you have any information that
Could be of assistance?"

"I wish I did officer, I'm sorry"

-

I heard on the news later that night
That they ended up arresting twenty
Teenagers from my area.

A group (gang?) of twenty people
Decided they would prove something
I don't understand what they tried
To prove. None of them had any ties
To the woman,
The woman in no way provoked the attack

She was a regular,
35 year old mother...
Walking home from work.

Apparently during the attack a civilian
Tried to stop them with a baseball bat
But they then proceeded to attack both,
Kicking them when they were down.

And I stared blankly at the screen,
Reminded of why I don't watch television
anymore.

What is wrong with this world?

-

All this while I'm staring into the
Officer's eyes...
They are green like mine, but darker,
And I actually can't remember him
Blinking at any point.
They looked worn, and I don't say this
For poetic effect...
They looked like eyes that had seen
Far too many things in their lifetime...

"Thank you for your time sir"

He said, as he turned and walked off
To the next house.

"No officer, thank you."

Thank you for doing something
About this fucked up world.

That officer was so much stronger than I,

I would have shot them all.

amen! im with you... *cock and pull* thats terrible how people do such things... and to prove what? that 20 against 1 person has no chance... cuz thats all it was. stupidity and boredom... i agree; i don't watch the tv either.

it baffles me sometimes how people can just walk up to someone they dont even know and brutalize them in such a horrible way. i live in a pretty small town and we have our bad parts. i dont know how many times i have taken for granted the cops that are driving around giving tickets to the speeders and the drunken drivers. tickets suck, but all in all, it makes MY driving experience so much safer. so what im getting at is: thank you for writing something with some meaning. thank you for bringing me back to the real world. this was..beautiful.

well chea. but i still don't understand. why even do anything to an innocent woman walking home from work. you really have to have to fucking life to do something of the sort. its so stupid. i mean i wouldn't do anything unless hit first or verbally provoked. but if i'm verbally provoked i'd insult right back. its stupid to do something like that they did.
