He dominated my doorway,
His authoritative aura
Preceded him to my steps
"Good evening sir, May
I have a few moments of
Your time to ask some questions?"
I knew that whatever he was
Canvasing my neighborhood for now,
I wouldn't be able to help him with
But what was I to say... no?
"Of course officer..."
In a strong voice he went on to say
Something about a random act of
Violence in the area,
Involving teenagers, about my age.
Something about a woman being beaten
To near death
"Do you have any information that
Could be of assistance?"
"I wish I did officer, I'm sorry"
-
I heard on the news later that night
That they ended up arresting twenty
Teenagers from my area.
A group (gang?) of twenty people
Decided they would prove something
I don't understand what they tried
To prove. None of them had any ties
To the woman,
The woman in no way provoked the attack
She was a regular,
35 year old mother...
Walking home from work.
Apparently during the attack a civilian
Tried to stop them with a baseball bat
But they then proceeded to attack both,
Kicking them when they were down.
And I stared blankly at the screen,
Reminded of why I don't watch television
anymore.
What is wrong with this world?
-
All this while I'm staring into the
Officer's eyes...
They are green like mine, but darker,
And I actually can't remember him
Blinking at any point.
They looked worn, and I don't say this
For poetic effect...
They looked like eyes that had seen
Far too many things in their lifetime...
"Thank you for your time sir"
He said, as he turned and walked off
To the next house.
"No officer, thank you."
Thank you for doing something
About this fucked up world.
That officer was so much stronger than I,
I would have shot them all.
