twin helixes spiraling towards oblivion
though we never knew it at the start.

she’d cast her eyes at me
and my skin would ignite with saccharine flames.
tumultuous oceans of scarlet tides
would course through the depths of me
chanting her name in celestial soliloquies.

I said good bye with hollow bones
that shattered like candy glass,
hammered by the silence between us.
the memory of her smile lingered
in my thoughts
like a crown of thorns
but I wore them as if they were peacock feathers
because their colors still danced on her lips.

she fell away from me tumbling into madness.
her porcelain skin too fragile
for the iron beaks
that pecked at the very best of her
like boeing vultures eager for their fill.
I know now that they circled around her
waiting for her moment of despair.

she wore her mother’s affliction like a pathos cross
carved from a sacrosanct womb.
the brunt of it strung her into bowline knots
tight enough to grind her tears
into obsidian rain.
what followed was the darkest storm.

if she had only reached for me then
I would have bled my soul dry for her
until it crumbled into dust.
my powdered spirit
would have taken delight
to have danced in the wind
that stroked the silken strands of her hair.
the very same strands
that echoed treasured memories
left on long forgotten pillowcases
slumbering in the past.

without my name on her lips
I sing swan song lullabies
to find whiskey whore dreams.
one glass follows another…
“I can almost see her face now”.
as I pour another glass
somehow I know I hear
the lizard king singing
Moonlight Drive
because,
“babe, I’m gonna drown tonight
goin' down,
down,
down”
