He didn't know what stirred him awake
Only that the sound of her uneven breathing
        made him nervous
She whimpered and he pulled her close,
felt the muscles in her body tense

he whispered. .. .
"Baby, who made you so fragile?"

She clutched the sheets
                      breathing hard
He wondered what form of madness
writhed beneath those frantic eyelids

So full of questions
and so empty of answers

He kissed her quivering lips
whispered to her until her convulsions subsided
and he kept a vigil as she slept,
hoping she'd feel safe.
