The heat breathed around us
as I watched the opening of your pores;
wide eyed and waiting,
I stood, wondering
if this was anything
like childbirth.

I was fixated
on your chameleon skin
that opened and closed,
to inhale and vomit that
"I love you", and
"I''m sorry"
bullshit.

I didn't need to ask
to know that my voice gave way
to your heartbeat,
pulsing and contorting
inside your chest,
as your pupils shrunk
and the irises began
to spill their pigment;
touching my lips,
and praying
to a merciful god.
