A howl over the telephone line.
"Your heart is already broken,"
a sentence coming to me from in between sobs.
I drag hard on my cigarette,
trying to let my silence speak for me,
but shaken by his words.
He's like an oracle,
drenched in nonsense but occassionally
wrenching eyes wide open
with painful stabs of truth.
I breathe weariness at his wailing.
"Japheth," I whisper, "go to bed."
