A turtle is addicted to nicotine. He became addicted after picking up the smouldering butts in his owner's garden, in Kouqian, China, and sulks if he doesn't get his fix. The Daily Express, which picked up the story from Chinese news agency Xinhua, includes a gob-smacking picture of the turtle doing a rather good impression of Dot Cotton.

i'd love to see that article. this turtle's vice is actually 'herbal' the cigarette was a one time joke. i was not convinced at first that this particular animal wanted to get 'high'. so i placed a smoking pipe next to him once and he quickly moved his head to it, stuck his nose down and then lifted his head and blew two tiny smoke rings out his nose. convinced it was his choice i've allowed him to continue his pleasure. its really the only thing that keeps him from killing our other turtle. crazy animals. i guess turtles like to smoke. thanks for your comment. :)

Well, some people like to smoke too but it doesn't do them any good.

!I remember that article! David Letterman read it on his hometown news segment not long after its release--I can almost picture the turtle--I think he was going to feature it on his stupid pet and human tricks, but the owner could not be reached in Kouqian.

That is an amazing picture. And an amazing turtle. In the summer time I get crabs to sit on my boat and hold cigarettes, but they won't smoke them.

to all animal lovers. no worries, this is done in moderation and only when the turtle himself chooses to do so. (we let him do it himself, we just supply the tools) he's a five year old very healthy turtle who loves the occasional smoke (not usually cigarettes) *wink wink*. ~ta~
