what started out as footprints stepped in quicksand
slowly sank down, to my thighs.

sinking below the sea,
drowning in my humble feelings.
I could lay down and die,
suffocate my brain cells
slip into mental paralysis before my last breath.
But not this time,
not on my watch,
it's time to put up a fight.

refusal to call out for a helping hand,
I find myself reliving past struggles.
This time, I will have to change my ways.
I'll have to choke up my pride and
spit out my dignity.
