When I was young, I said
“That will never be me!”
The future was mine to see.

As a teen, I said
“That will never be me!”
Empty rage against the machine.

As a young adult, I said
“That is not me!”
Much more than I could see.

As a parent, I said
“She is not me!”
Now I know what must be.
