I once looked down on the bums on the street
I scoffed and walked by annoyed
They just beg for money to buy their booze
Then lie on the street, wasting their lives
[such waste]
Then it happened literally in a flash
All was gone, consumed by flame
My home, all worldly possessions gone
My friends seem to vanish too
[you’re homeless now]
I wandered the streets looking for friends
They all disowned me, that homeless kid
I long for the bed I once complained was uncomfortable
While I sleep under a comforter of newspaper
[cold inside and out]
The next day I saw the man I scoffed and ignored
He held out his cup to me, five dollars in change
And for the first time since losing my house, I cried
After all I had been through I found a true friend
[insanity]
