inspired by Brad Paisley's "It Did"
11-6-07
nothing lost into the hour glass today
that past the time away
to turn the grains of sand
that continued to drip one by one in two
until it was empty.
moving from town to town;
it seemed like a bad dream
come true for me;
so I just held on to the memories
of all of my ex-lovers;
as I drank the pain of loneliness away
I wished I could stay close to you;
forever until the sunsets stopped
coming up from the horizon.
so many favorite songs we shared
together as we made love
reminiscing the past;
God how I wish it could last
more than a second;
but I guess that's why they make
the liquor strong for me.
so I have to grab hold of something
just so I can stand;
but my faithful one I use to love
never called me back
and I was left here again
in this room that the air
was getting thick and the
smell of alcohol on my breath
was getting worse.
another day went by
as I got consumed in my work
to try to make a living;
even though it was a simple kind of living;
as my callouses showed you how hard I worked;
I was happy finally
that all I had to hold on to was
my work, my loneliness, and my alcohol
that never caused me to smile;
except for the alcohol.
