the gauge, it said "low"
on a friday night morning
the gauge, it said "low"
like an uncertain warning
"you're running on empty
with nowhere to go
you're running on empty
and you might as well know
there was less in the tank
than you would admit
and this gauge suggests humbly
that you should submit
to the science of numbers
and figures and facts
drop all the pretenses
along with the acts"
and the gauge spoke serenely
though savagely cold
impassive, impressive
and frightfully bold
for all my achievements
and all my proud talking
meant naught to the gauge
which then sent me walking
down the long road
toward the nearest gas station
with rational malice
without hesitation
some signs read "east"
but were otherwise bent
as if their condition
could voice their dissent
