he gets on the streetcar
barely able to walk
his jeans are tattered
his life is torn
his shirt smells like whiskey
and his pants like urine
and his socks are wet from
the puddles beneath the holes in his shoes
and he doesn't have enough
change to ride the streetcar
but he gets on anyways
hoping that today the driver
won't be a prick
but what do you know?
today is the day we celebrate
independence and peace
and the driver doesn't care
cuz he's getting paid double
to work a holiday
and the lost little man is just
trying to find his way home
where ever that may be
but i guess he'll have to walk
because we don't give any breaks
in this world.
even on a holiday.
