I saw a beautiful Alice
stumbling out of a deep hole
in the mounds of the earth, her
hair spilling in rainbows all
over her lithe shoulders and
a miscreant smirk placed onto
her beautiful face like pillars
of daisy-chains making faces
at the sunshine above.
she told me that I was fragile,
like a pocket-sized worry doll,
but I knew that she was gentle
as well, like the dolphins that
form shapes in the water, arcs
and silver-foam salt globes.
she disappeared from me, on to
a land of fairy-tales and girls
who drown in bathtubs but
keep their dresses clean, where
boys make promises and kisses
are like wild orange tiger lilies.
there the sunsets lick the horizon
and make pink and yellow fairy
wings, and I thought to myself
that she needed a haven as
beautiful and precious as herself,
where the constellations break
into patterns of sea-scaled mermaids
and angels with diamond wings.
She always told me that someday
I would get my wings, as she sped
off into the freckled night. I told
her not to forget our garden, our
magic place of dragonflies and
violins and eve’s fruit not forbidden.
she could only smile and left me a
moon-tinged kiss, saying “fear not,
sunshine, I am always here,
always, always.”
for my beautiful June on her birthday. I love you so much, my strength. happy birthday.
